1. Goal setting

Its comes to that point in the year, i.e. the start of a new one, that humans like to set a goal or targets for improvement in some respect for the year ahead. Of course the calendar is a man made construct and ‘time' is an on-going continuum but lets focus on the fresh perspective and the psychological power that the start of a New Year can bring. We all set goals in different ways mainly based on our personality. But for simplicity we will look at the most successful form of goal setting- The performance orientated persona.

Here are the key personality traits:

- focus on process more than product
- Preference for learning based goals
- Favour difficult/ self- referenced goals
- High in effort and intrinsic motivation

So how do you turn this into practice? Spend a good deal of time noting down goals for the year, then over a 2 week period refine down to 2 or 3 goals which you feel mean the most to you personally and would give you a deep sense of satisfaction to achieve. Then focus on 1 goal. Ideally it should be tough but attainable; 3-6 months in the future and has some form of objective measurement (but a subjective measurement can be equally powerful i.e. ‘i want to look good naked!’). But still the overriding factors are what it means to you personally and how it will propel you forward both physically and psychologically.

Think carefully about your big 2019 goal then be decisive, give it everything and do not relent.

Best of luck!
