Open Water Swimming

Swimming

With the weather getting that bit warmer with each passing week, the open water season is nearly upon us and that means you can mix up your training by heading outside and doing some training in the sunshine.

There are a number of reasons to don that wetsuit and find a lake to have a dip in:

Scenery: Most lakes are seriously nice and you get lost in all that is around you. Much better than swimming indoors

Less Repetition: The majority of swimming lakes have at least a 500m loop so there is no need to turn around every 25m or 50m

Weather: Unless you are unlucky, swimming in the sunshine is really nice!

Race Preparation: Before you do your first open water triathlon, I would definitely recommend trying it out for real. It will give you such confidence to know that you can do it.

Free Speed: Swimming in a wetsuit gives you ‘free speed’ due to the buoyancy effect, as it allows your body to ride higher in the water. You’ll be amazed how much faster you are outside

I have always found swimming in Open Water to be so much better than swimming in a pool. Try it for yourself. It makes you feel so invigorated swimming outside; and of course it is amazing swimming in the glorious sunshine.

Some Equipment You May Need:

Bare Essentials: Westuit, Swim Cap, Goggles, Towel (For afterwards)

Optional Extras: Body Glide (Stops chafing and also makes it easier to take your wetsuit off afterwards), Neoprene Gloves (Keep your hands warm), Booties (Keep your toes warm), Garmin (Track how far you’ve gone), Suncream, Toe Float (Keep valuables with you and also allows lifeguards and canoeists to keep a track on you)
