Avoid The Winter Weight Gain

It’s the time of the year where temptation is literally everywhere you look, the box of sweets left oh so conveniently left on the desk in your office, the “few drinks” with a friends, and that’s before all the real festivities start of the Turkey and Treats, all crammed into the week of Xmas itself.

All this excess and partying can leave you reaching for the gym application and your running shoes come January as you stand looking at the clock at midnight and promising this year you’re going to be fitter and healthier.

This year why not try another way? Instead of regret, why not look at ways you can have fun and enjoy the season and all the trimmings without having to trim your waistline afterwards.

What’s the secret?

Sorry but there really is no “secret” but there are things you can look to do between now and 2018 that will help you.

Write It Down – Sounds crazy right? But making a food diary, for a day, a week or even the whole festive period really shines a light and makes you think how much have consumed and allows you to feel either positive if you’ve done good, and avoided your third mince pie, or maybe think about how much you should consume tomorrow if your list for the day your writing looks longer than your child’s list to Santa!

Plan It in – So your great at arranging beers with the boys, drinks with the girls and the dutiful trips to try grans famous Xmas cake but why not make an appointment or two over the period that involves exercise and fitness? That’s right, in the middle of the chaos, the best thing could be for you to get away from the couch and the repeats on TV and book sometime in for a gym class, run, swim or even just a nice long walk. Make sure you book it in, write it down and create a reminder – this way you’re a lot less likely to break the deal with yourself. Another great way to make sure you follow through your good intentions is joining others, whether that’s part of an organized run or incorporate friends and family, however make sure if they cancel or let you down you still follow through with your commitment.

Buy Smart - So I’m not claiming to Martin Lewis and save you money, but here is great idea to help your waistline and your pocket, and links back to points one and two about writing things down and planning things in. Try thinking before you do the food shop about what you actually need, make a list, and try to stick to it. Retailers know humans “love a deal” and have invested millions into the way the brain works. However you’ve read this, so I know you’re smarter than to fall for the “Buy 2 get one free” gimic especially on items such as biscuits, cakes and chocolate logs ! If your only catering for a small party- only fill your cupboard’s with what you’ll need, having a shopping trolley so full you can’t see over the top of it, because the dread of the running out of 12 assorted ring donugts on the one day the shops close is not really an excuse. If it’s not in the house and you have to make effort to get it, you’re less likely to consume it FACT, maybe even look at some of the healthier options out there on your favorite items.

A Little means a lot – I’m not suggesting this Xmas you take up marathon running, reach for your bike and cycle and make it to Lands’ End or even use the left over goose fat to smother yourself before crossing the channel.  Try any and all gentle exercise, which gets you up, out the house, away from the choccie’s and stimulates your digestive system to start burning the fuel you’ve put into your tank.

Here is another great tip – the earlier in the day you fire up the engine (your body) the longer your body will begin the process of burning calories. If you never let your metabolism rest for long period’s means it will constantly be working to produce energy. Getting your metabolism working earlier in the mornings can really help, and avoid long periods of in activity, keep revving the engine every few hours to keep your body ticking over burning the fuel your consuming.

Have a great Xmas and New Year !
