1 Week to go… Round 1 WTS Abu Dhabi - 07/02/2015

My recent blog entries up until now have revolved mainly around my time management regarding my commute to and working in London, versus my Triathlon training. To be honest I’m not going to repeat myself with too much detail on my specific training sessions – all we need to know is that I’ve been sticking to my plan and it’s been going great. Averaging 5 days a week training – I am now feeling fresh and confident ahead of my first triathlon of the year, Round 1 of the World Triathlon Series in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

I won’t pretend the nerves haven’t kicked in yet – I am freakin’ nervous. Yes, I normally get the usual ‘Pre race nerves’ as I am guessing most of you out there get before your first/every race of the season but there is something inside me that keeps reminding me: It’s going to be warm – very warm, the competition will be tough (a given at any WTS event) and also I am flying the whole way to the UAE to race – so I’d really want to come away with a PB or a very decent result!!!

I can proudly announce that I’ve given up the consumption of alcoholic beverages recently which for me was the hardest part of my pre race training. It’s not as though I am a raging party animal who has to drink everyday of the week or anything, but those post work beers/wine can be quite nice after a long week – let’s not try to fool anyone here! With that gone from my system, I’ve had a good run at training, no injuries and have saved a bit of cash also – wins all round!

This weekend I am planning on running the Reading half marathon route over about 2 hours, nice and easy pace with the idea of scouting the route as opposed to putting in a serious effort. After a stretch session I have the horrible task of breaking down my TT bike and I also need to start packing my bike bag. I fly out of London Heathrow Thursday morning so I want to get the bike broken down and my race gear packed into the bag on Sat/Sun and then that’s out of the way. I will pack most of my clothes/race equipment into the bag, using my clothes as protection for my bike frame/wheels. I haven’t been able to come across bubble wrap and at this stage I’ll be happy just to use my clothes to be honest!

In terms of training between now and race day, it is my intention to stick to the following plan:

Saturday 28thFeb – Reading half route with a gentle pace

Sunday 1stMarch – Swim set (previous blogs) in Stratford pool

Monday 2ndMarch – Light 10km run Monday night after work in Reading

Tuesday 3rdMarch – 50% Swim set in Reading Central pool

Wednesday 4thMarch – 10km fast in Reading

Thursday 5thMarch – 09:00 flight to Abu Dhabi

Friday 6thMarch – 08:00 – 1500m Open Water Swim on race route, Abu Dhabi Yacht Club/Marina

Saturday 7thMarch – Race Day!!!
